Baddour has no issue with Davis hanging around the program
Sep 21, 2011
Dick Baddour is in his last stage as North Carolina's athletics director and the search committee has recently targeted South Carolina's Eric Hyman as a primary target.
But there are still things left on Baddour's plate, like guiding UNC through the end of the NCAA investigation by attending the hearing on Oct. 28 in front of the committee on infractions in Indianapolis. The current head coach must be at the meeting, meaning Everett Withers will be in attendance.
But we don't yet know for sure if the ousted head coach Butch Davis will be appearing.
"I haven't thought about it in terms of whether Butch would go or not go and I haven't discussed that with him," Baddour told Adam and Joe on 99.9 The Fan. "If that is something that he would wanna do for some reason then we should seriously consider whether or not we should do that. I would have no objection to him being there."
While we don't know if Davis will be going to Indianapolis we do know that he's been visible around campus. He took in a home game from the newly opened Blue Zone, and he was the subject of his former team presenting him with the game ball after the win over James Madison.
Without giving a specific answer to the gameball, Baddour seemed more than okay with Davis being around.
"He put this staff together, he put this program together. He remains from our conversation, he's vitally interested. We got a lot of seats in Kenan Stadium and in my view we got room for people who wanna be there."
As far as expansion goes, Baddour was admittedly against it half a decade ago when Boston College, Virginia Tech and Miami joined the mix. He was a proponent of home-and-home in basketball and playing everyone in your league in football. But once the league stepped over that line he got on board with doing whatever necessary to maintain a strong, viable league with a healthy share of the market place. He praised John Swofford's for his work in accepting Syracuse and Pitt and agreed that it very much had to do with what the other major players in collegiate athletics were doing.
"I would definitely say that the changing landscape across the country had significant impact. The ACC wanted to be in a position where it could dictate its future, that it could decide who it wanted in. And I applaud that move."

Doesn't his son still go to high school in Chapel Hill? I imagine it's difficult to live in Chapel Hill and stay away from UNC-Chapel Hill.- Posted by 4tarheels
I could ;)

Bingo.
But as usual, the deniers and deflectors are in here defending all things Carolina.
Just once, I wish one of these folks would just speak common sense, and respond with, "Yeah, he really shouldn't be there probably. It looks bad."
But you can't even get that much from them. It really is funny, and ridiculous. I know I'd respect them for that and be more inclined to just let the topic die. Instead, they come here pretending nothing's wrong with it in any way (like the good little Iraqi Ministers of Information that they are) and we have to go on the attack here.
TBK - you know I don't deny or deflect, but I don't have a problem with Butch going to games. To be honest, I'm surprised he IS going. I thought when Butch was canned he wouldn't let the door hit his rear on his way out to the bank.
That said, I can see where it's not the PC thing to do. Part of me - I guess the naive part - thinks it nice that Butch still cares. I thought that the way he was fired - so suddenly, after being given public support by Baddour and Thorp - that Butch would be bitter and never set foot on Kenan again.
It just looks bad. And Carolina officials giving him a vote of confidence almost appears to be an endorsement of him. Butch and Carolina still seem to be in bed together.
The only real defense is to say nothing was PROVEN to be tied directly back to Butch. But his policies didn't work. He was fired for that. Most would just move on in this situation.
It also feels like he and Carolina continue to thumb their noses at everything the rest of the world feels is acceptable and right.
what vote of confidence did they give him? He is attending games and got the game ball. That is all that Baddour is condoning.
The article here is building it up to more than it really is.
nothing to see here..really.
He has no problem with Butch "hanging around the program".
That's not just attending a football game.

- Posted by TruthBKnown Left The Building- Posted by jgunn- Posted by TruthBKnown Left The BuildingWhile there might not be anything wrong with Butch "hanging around" in fact, it's the appearance factor. While they are under review like this, UNC would do best to distance themselves from Butch Davis until the NCAA rules. It might give the appearance of them saying "we're not sorry for our actions." That might not be the case, but again, appearance is everything.- Posted by fzero

- Posted by cussmikemeoutWhen you put a lot of working to building a football team you are connected to those kids forever. He loves those kids and he wants to see them play. Since he's not employed at another university and his son is playing high school football at Chapel Hill, why shouldn't he be at the games. I can guarentee he's not interfering with Coach Withers. He wouldn't disrespect Coach Withers, no coach would. So why should Baddour have a problem with it? Coach Davis doesn't go to the game and the haters will be on here ctitizing him for only caring about the money not the team. He goes to the game and he's interfering. No matter what he does the haters are going to hate.- Posted by jgunn- Posted by TruthBKnown Left The BuildingWhile there might not be anything wrong with Butch "hanging around" in fact, it's the appearance factor. You know, he could arrange something with Withers to make the occasional appearance at practice, or right after practice, if he wants to stay in touch with his players. I don't blame him for that. It's almost a parent-child relationship. He doesn't want to walk out of their lives forever.
But there are ways to stay in touch, and doing it so visibly in the stands of the football stadium, is probably not the best way to go about it.
