Sports theme music shouldn't be messed with
Posted October 27, 2011
I am really bummed out about these baseball playoffs. I’m not upset about the play on the field. The drama has actually been pretty good and I am happy to see some different teams competing. I am so mad that FOX decided to get rid of the trademark baseball music for good. Obviously mad is a relative term, but I actually screamed at my television when I found out the network dumped the baseball theme:
in favor of the football theme:
FOX made the change late in the 2010 playoffs, but I thought it was temporary or some kind of licensing issue. When I heard the Football theme this year I did some googling and found a quote from FOX Sports President Eric Shanks where he said the old music was “too slow” and “kind of cathedral music”. What?! It was perfect. Now before you get mad at me and leave a comment here saying, “how is this news?!” I will tell you. Music is a very important part of life. It’s become an important part of sports. How many of you get jacked up when you hear the NFL on CBS theme every Sunday? It just sounds like football. And what if the College basketball theme on CBS changed? Would March ever be the same if you couldn’t fill out your bracket with this in the background?
Gives you chills doesn’t it?
I get annoyed when people in my business “fix” what isn’t broken. I can see the suits at FOX discussing this now. They wanted to make things “more uniform”. I bet they didn’t think we would notice. I did and I am bummed. It made this month a little less October for me.
