Ref ejects Corchiani, Gugliotta from NC State game
Feb 19, 2012
Two North Carolina State basketball legends, Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani, were thrown out of the Wolfpack's 76-62 loss to No. 20 Florida State on Saturday.
And there is no explanation to be found as to why the two were tossed by official Karl Hess with about 6½ minutes left.
Hess was approached by an Associated Press reporter after the game but declined to comment. Corchiani told WRAL after the game Saturday that that's the only thing he'd like to know, is if Hess has a response.
Corchiani said he and Gugliotta did not use any profanity or threaten Hess, and kept it clean as they were with their families.
"I have spoken to Commissioner John Swofford and Karl Hicks, Associate Commissioner for Basketball Operations, regarding our concerns and our need for clarification as to why this occurred," said NC State athletic director Debbie Yow. "We expect fair treatment of our fans at State athletic events."
"You know what I think we got underneath his skin and he didn't like it," Corchiani said. The former NC State guard said they were staying on Hess but there are plenty of people that were seated around he and Gugliotta that would confirm they did not say anything profane.
Corchiani went on to say he's not trying to take anything from the program and feels bad that Hess throwing them out has become such a big deal.
The ACC supervisor of officials John Clougherty released a statement regarding the ejection, but it does not offer much clarity as to why Hess felt the need to eject Corchiani and Gugliotta.
"Under Rule 10, when circumstances warrant, an official has the authority to request home game management to eject fans when the behavior, in the officials' judgement, is extreme or excessive. It's unfortunate in this instance that ACC protocol of communicating directly with the home game management was not followed, and instead, a building security officer was solicited. We will re-communicate this policy with all officials to ensure proper protocol is followed."
A security officer had approached the student section around Corchiani and Gugliotta earlier in the game but did not remove anyone, until later when Hess singled out the two former players.
Corchiani and Gugliotta will join The Insiders, Mark Thomas and Mike Maniscalco, on 620AM The Buzz on Monday morning to discuss the incident.
Gugliotta scored 1,536 points while playing for N.C. State from 1988-92, then played 13 years in the NBA. Corchiani had 1,425 points during his career from 1987-91 and spent three seasons in the NBA. Both players' jersey numbers hang from the RBC Center rafters.

RE: Ref ejects Corchiani, Gugliotta from NC State gameOh, and Scott Wood brings no value to State's bball team anymore. He produces nothing; if he can't make 3 pointers, then he brings no value. Heck, even J. J. Redick changed his game up and starting taking shorter jumpers and driving to the hoop to get more points. He's even missing his free throws more than usual lately. It's as though his attitude is that if he can't make the three, then he won't try anything....but I can only imagine how frustrated he is lately...he probably feels quite demoralized lately anyway, and I can't say as I blame him...maybe he'll have a good night tonight..I hope so...at State is more fun to watch this year.:) Go Pack!!
RE: Ref ejects Corchiani, Gugliotta from NC State gameActually, after hearing all the facts that came from this, I can see where Karl Hess is coming from with this. Yes, he handled this wrongly in that he didn't follow the mandated protocol for such a situation, but the substance of his argument is quite valid: Corchiani and Gugliotta were constantly berating him, which by itself is no big deal provided there is no profanity or violence threatened(which there clearly wasn't), but Hess felt that this was impeding his ability to do his job, i.e., view the video monitors, confer with the scorers' table and other officials, etc., so, after awhile, and a previous warning, he decided to have them ejected, and I can't say that I blame him. Coach K and other crazy fans may curse and holler vulgar chants, but this is super normal and the emotions of the game, but when you begin to impede the officials' ability to do their jobs, and you continue to do so after being warned, then I can see why they were ejected. Besides, Gugs and Corch should have known better...yeah, they didn't cuss or threaten, but they were in fact wrong. The biggest error though was how Hess handled it.

its wood not woods. and he clearly does not stand around. they set up no plays with picks or anything to get him open and the guys defending him are on top of him the whole game. he runs around getting grabbed and pushed and never a play to open him up. thats not his fault.State lost the game cause they played like craaaap. Karl Hess nor the other refs caused them to stand around like zombies. They are still in the hunt for the ncaa's and can make it happen with a few more wins but they got to play with intensity and heart. Not sure if Howell and Leslie give 100% all the time and Woods needs to quit standing around on offense. Make it happen Pack!!!- Posted by shakennotstirred
