Visiting Augusta is a must

Posted April 4, 2012

If you haven't read the story about the dog eating some guy's tickets to the Masters you should do yourself a favor and read it now.

If you think the guy is crazy for forcing his beloved pet to cough up the tickets, you have obviously never been to Augusta.

I am a dog lover. I really enjoy having my dog around, but if she ate my Masters tickets, I would join this guy in finding some hydrogen peroxide.

I had the good luck of working a city where we covered the Masters on a regular basis. Before I came to WRAL, I was a sports anchor at WIS in Columbia, South Carolina. Columbia is less than an hour away from Augusta and we went to the Masters every year.

I had high expectations before my first trip to Augusta. I can honestly say it is the only sporting event that has ever exceeded by expectations. Even a non-golf fan should have the chance to see this golf course. It is a thing of beauty from the perfect grass to the beautiful flowers. I even joke that the keepers of the course wash the turtles because the turtles who wander up onto the greens are spotless. You will never see a piece of litter on the grounds, and it is a wonderful way to experience nature.

The concession stands are outstanding! You can buy a beer for $2 and a sandwich for $1.50. For the golf fan it doesn't get any better. You can feel the history of the place when you walk in. Everyone working is a member and the members wear their green jackets. You can walk over by "Amen Corner" and remember guys who have blown tournaments on those holes. You can see the bridge Jack Nicklaus walked over all of those times. It's a magical place.

If you are now inspired to make the trek over there this year or soon, don't get too excited. The Masters is among the hardest tickets in the sports world to obtain. They don't just sell Masters tickets. There is a waiting list and a lottery. If you want to go to the practice round you will have to go through the same process. That's why I do not blame the man for making his dog puke.

If you always wanted to go to the Masters and you've been putting it off, throw your name in the lottery which starts May 1st. This is something that should be on every sports fan's "bucket list". Heck, it should be on everyone's "bucket list". Just remember to have some hydrogen peroxide on hand if you have a mischievous dog in the house.

When you zoom in, apparently the pics were taken when the course was razed for work to be done. Looks like Tiger rampaged.

It is beautiful on TV but one cannot experience the place until you set foot on the grounds. Truly amazing and a must see for everyone.

Didn't win the lottery this year. Hoping for next year.

Not for any sports fan, I have zero interest in golf or Augusta. I used to be a greenskeeper by the way. Not everyone is as obsessed with sports as DG likes to think, some of us have filters.

I had an opportunity about 10 years ago, but could not work it out from a business standpoint.

AS I am 60, Augusta is still very high on the list. Others include catching a 10lb bass, catching a blue marlin, catching a 40 lb striped bass, being INVITED to the White House (will NEVER happen with current resident-for sure), giving away my daughter, ...

If you have never been, I understand TV does not show well the vast changes in elevation at Augusta National.
