Triangle ACCtion: Davis walks on, ads cause stir

Drew Davis, son of former North Carolina coach Butch Davis and quarterback at East Chapel Hill High, will be a "preferred walk-on" with the Tar Heels.

Despite offers from FCS schools and an opportunity to walk-on at Miami, Davis' destination makes plenty of sense. While his father was coaching the Tar Heels, Davis was just like any other teenager in high school establishing friends and his own path.

Now he wants to be with those friends in college and on the football field. That it happens to be at the same school that fired his father over a multi-pronged NCAA scandal just makes the situation a little more complicated.

North Carolina spent the last year distancing themselves from the Butch Davis era, so allowing his son to enroll and join the football program raised a few eyebrows. It drags Jennifer Wiley back into the conversation, which is the last thing the school would want considering the academic fraud scandal is still in the news cycle.

Drew Davis was also a point of contention between his father and North Carolina chancellor Holden Thorp, who was popped with a secondary violation for commenting on a scholarship offer weeks before he fired Butch Davis.

Lack of self-awareness in Chapel Hill? Certainly par for the course throughout the entire scandal, but this particular instance is rather mild.

Credit to Larry Fedora and his coaching staff for understanding Drew Davis shouldn't be punished or held responsible for anything his father did or didn't do at North Carolina. A week's worth of questionable PR can be managed and will largely be forgotten once the season starts.

By the time Davis gets to Senior Day in Chapel Hill, it will be nothing more than a point of irony.

Effective Advertising

Don Draper would be the first to explain advertising is based on happiness. It's a billboard on the side of a road that screams with reassurance that whatever you're doing is OK and ultimately you are OK.

NC State is doing just that with their "Our State" advertising campaign. It's the type of reassurance athletics director Debbie Yow has focused on since she arrived in Raleigh. The university wants you to know that your choice of school and team is OK.

NC State is also trolling the hell out of North Carolina.

Fans of the Tar Heels have been quick to point out historical football records, basketball dominance and the fact that Mississippi State used the slogan first. Even players like Giovani Bernard were compelled to comment ,tweeting "...this junk coming down real soon."

Thing is, why is North Carolina concerned with the campaign at all? Wake Forest is NC State's primary partner.

Drew Davis at UNC.... which tutor did he get assigned?

UNC is making great efforts to move past the lies towards our programs. This is proof that Coach Davis is still loved by all UNC fans.

ALL UNC fans??? Far from it. I am a fairly typical large-level Rams Club member for nearly 40 years, and I have never loved Davis, or even really liked him.

Sorry. TILT! Game Over!

The only game that is over is saying "ALL UNC Fans." Obviously, you can rarely say "ALL" about any topic. There are almost always outliers. But the majority of UNC fans supported Butch, and if polled, would probably want him back today if they could.

I don't believe that is a fair assessment. The majority of Tar Heel fans on this site may want him still, but they by no means represent the majority of UNC fans. Now that the story has unfolded, I believe most UNC fans do not want someone like Butch who could not control his program. We want someone who will raise money for the program to build facilities like Butch, someone who can be successful recruiting like Butch, however, we also want that same coach to have control over the program and do things right, and to win with all that talent (something Butch couldn't do often enough). Maybe Fedora can be that coach, I'm excited to have him at the helm and look forward to what he can do.

I have no problem with Drew being a walk-on for Carolina, but I can understand why it raised some eyebrows. He seems like a nice kid, so I hope it works out for him. As for Daddy Davis showing up for the games, his "job" with the NFL may not interfere with that, so there may not be many Butch sightings at Kenan.
