Buy a book, support the troops
Jul 6, 2012
About a month ago, I reviewed a book set at the old Durham Athletic Park called The Greatest Show on Dirt. The fiction novel that takes a young man on a trail of life lessons and growth within the backdrop of a minor league ball park seemingly never touched the table as I read through it.
The author, James Bailey, is now teaming up with Books For Troops, Inc. to give the gift of mind-escaping literature to soldiers stationed in Afghanistan for every book purchased in July.
Books For Troops is a volunteer group started by Ellen Keegan, a retired school teacher in Clifton Park, N.Y., that gives books to troops for the purposes of entertainment, stress relief and freeing the hardships of warfare. Shipping books to the other side of the world, however, is not cheap and postage presents the biggest cost for Keegan and her organization. For that reason, Bailey is pledging $1 to Books For Troops for every copy of the book sold in July – paperback and e-book.
I have two brothers in the military that are both huge baseball fans and they will each get a copy. I have had the pleasure to watch a game with Bailey and I know that his contributions are genuine.
Do yourself a favor and buy the book. It’s a great read and the small sticker price for you is worth a lot more emotionally for the troops. And if you want to donate to the cause further, you can do so by going to http://booksfortroopscp.webs.com/
