A trip to the video vault

We save a lot of video at WRAL.
Sometimes, it gets a little tedious. We take the raw video we shoot of an ACC game, and dub down all of the decent plays - most of which never make air. But this "file video" comes in handy at the most unexpected times.
This week is a prime example. Tom O'Brien and Derek Dooley have a long relationship, dating back to the late 1980s when both were at Virginia. O'Brien was an assistant coach, Dooley a walk-on wide receiver who eventually earned a scholarship.
O'Brien wasn't Dooley's position coach, but they got to know each other well and have kept in touch over the years. They even play golf together each summer, and Dooley says TOB was one of the people he leaned on for advice when he got his first head coaching job.
I decided to run a story before the State-UT game on their relationship, and thought it was worth a look to see if maybe - just maybe - we have video of either of them from UVA playing against Duke, State or Carolina.
I shuttled through two games from 1990, and bingo - there's a Derek Dooley touchdown catch. Then a few plays later, there's a shot of George Welsh on the sidelines, and standing next to him is a tall red-haired guy in a baseball cap with his arms folded. Yep, it was Tom O'Brien.
Finding old video like this is one of the things I enjoy about this gig, it's like a walk through memory lane. Hopefully, it makes our stories better.
