The Mitchell Report: Triple-A National Title game
Posted September 16, 2012
This will serve as my weekly column for notes about things I find interesting outside the Triangle. Enjoy my insights. I will enjoy sharing them ...
This is a special edition of "The Mitchell Report". It will be completely focused on the Triple-A National Championship game set to be played Tuesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
-If you don't know anything about this game, it's pretty cool. It's a one game championship between the Champs of the International League and the Champs of the Pacific Coast league. Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Reno (Diamondbacks) will play in Tuesday's game. Both teams feature several players you will likely see at the Major League level very soon. If you are a baseball fan you should take the time to head out to the ballpark and see some great talent on display.
-One guy you should definitely keep an eye on is Reno pitcher Trevor Bauer who is scheduled to start for the Aces. He actually started 4 games for Arizona this year but that didn't go as well as planned. He finished 1-2 with and ERA over 6. But the guy has a good future and is fun to watch. He was the third overall pick in the 2011 draft out of UCLA. If you are a fan of the College World Series, you've likely seen him pitch. I was in Omaha when his team made it to the Championship series against South Carolina. He was the guy who insisted on wearing the faded ratty looking UCLA hat. If you saw any of the broadcasts, you know exactly what I am talking about. He will start Tuesday, with a nicer hat, at the DBAP.
- Former Major League outfielder Brett Butler is the manager of the Reno Aces. He played for a handful of teams during his pro career including the Braves, Giants, and Dodgers. There is a great story about Butler and this game. His son is set to get married next week. He asked his dad when the season would be over and Butler answered "September 18th in Durham", fully predicting his team's trip to the National Title Game. Butler was right to keep his son from getting married a week earlier like they had planned. Good timing could make this a special week in the Butler household.
-Pawtucket's been in the news lately since Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said the Boston Red Sox roster was the "weakest September roster in the history of baseball". He would love to have some of the Pawtucket players called up to the bigs, but the guys are a little busy winning a Triple-A Championship.
-This game will be huge for the city of Durham. It will be on national Television on the NBC Sports Network at 7pm. I am part of the broadcast team for this game and we have a lot planned to highlight the city. I will be talking a lot about the ballpark and what it's meant to the downtown area. It's a great opportunity to show what a great baseball city Durham is. This is an exciting opportunity for the Bulls to showcase one of the best parks in the country. It's also your last chance to see baseball in the Triangle this season.
