Advice from a rival?

It’s not often you’ll hear of a coach from one school giving advice to his or her arch-rival. But Sylvia Hatchell did just that Monday night.

In her post-game comments after UNC’s 74-57 win over NC State, Hatchell praised State’s interim coach, Stephanie Glance.

Then, Hatchell took it a step further.

“I give my endorsement,” Hatchell said. “It doesn’t mean anything, but I’m going to say it anyway. I think that they (NC State) should just go ahead and name her (Glance) the coach because there’s no doubt she deserves it.”

“She’s doing a great job with this team,” Hatchell continued. “So, I’m hoping that they would do that and I know that’s what Kay (Yow) wanted.”

In a way, it’s fitting for Hatchell to give Glance her endorsement. Hatchell has said one of the key figures behind her hiring at North Carolina was then-NC State coach Kay Yow.

Maybe she’s repaying an old favor?

Of course, NC State’s not going to hire a coach based on their arch-rival coach’s opinion, but it’s interesting to hear one coach speak publicly about another in this way.

Glance has made it clear she wants the job on a permanent basis. And while Glance is a candidate, NC State has committed to doing a nation-wide search for the school’s next basketball coach.

RE: Advice from a rival?

Glance had an interview for the head coaching position for NCSU women's basketball last night. She failed miserably. The team wasn't ready to play against their biggest rival. The team came out flat and played horribly. Further, one would think that with Trina Trice as a bench coach, at least one of State's centers could be taught some offensive skills including how to put back an offensive rebound as opposed to throwing it back outside to again run a play. A new coaching staff is desperately needed.

RE: Advice from a rival?

Easy to recommend someone when you can dominate them. Hopefully whoever the new coach is an upgrade in talent will follow.
