Hatchell says, Don't forget Charlotte Smith's shot

This week’s Great Sports Debates covered the best games ever on Tuesday, but one significant game didn’t make the cut – and drew a quick response for being overlooked.
“Don’t forget the women. Don’t forget the Charlotte Smith shot that won the national championship,” UNC women’s coach Sylvia Hatchell said in a phone message to WRAL.
The Tuesday segment included a number of memorable games – but didn’t include Smith’s 3-point shot with .7 left that won the national title for UNC in 1994. Carolina was down by two points to Louisiana Tech and ran an inbounds play for Smith to hit a three-pointer.
“When I saw that, I thought, ‘How could they forget Charlotte Smith’s shot?’” said Hatchell, who said she was on the road recruiting.
Good point – and thanks for the call, Coach.
One other women’s classic – Virginia’s epic triple-overtime win over N.C. State at Reynolds Coliseum in 1991.

We often forget women's sports, but they play a great game too (more fundamentals rather than showboating). I was going to mention the 1991 NCSU / UVA game, but looks like someone else beat me to it. That was another classic. I'll never forget Coach Yow's expression when she came out before that game with the team and saw Reynolds Coliseum packed - absolutely priceless.RE: Hatchell says, Don't forget Charlotte Smith's shot
It still breaks my heart that David Thompson's niece won a National Championship for the Tar Heels.RE: Hatchell says, Don't forget Charlotte Smith's shot
Charlotte Smith's shot was one of the greatest clutch plays I've ever seen to conclude a great game for a national championship. It should be at the top of the list.RE: Hatchell says, Don't forget Charlotte Smith's shot
