Roy Williams really hates the new block-charge rule
Nov 19, 2009
Roy Williams is one of the many college basketball coaches who voiced his displeasure before the season about the new imaginary lane underneath the basket where a defender cannot draw a charge. In his Wednesday press conference, the UNC coach went into great detail on how the rule affected a block-charge call in the previous night’s game between Gonzaga and Michigan State.
“The Gonzaga kid was standing there. His feet were on the lane line so it was nowhere close to being underneath the basket,” Williams said. “He’d already gotten out his iced tea, added the sugar to it, added the extra lemon, got back in his perfect stance and the guy ran over him and the referee comes out and calls it ‘block.’…In my mind, there’s no way [the referee] wasn’t thinking about that stupid imaginary line.”
“The kid was in there long enough to fill an income tax return.”
Williams says he was on the rules committee and was in favor of a painted line indicating a “no-charge” zone and not a lane that is up to a referee’s interpretation. “It’s one of those things that we’ve done that hasn’t helped the officials at all. I think it has hurt them…and I hate it for the officials.”
“Can I get in trouble for this?” he asked laughing.
“This press conference has deteriorated a great deal,” Williams smiled while leaving. “Figure out how to cover that up so I don’t get in trouble.”
