Drafted second, Ackley now playing second
Jan 29, 2010
The Seattle Mariners seem committed to moving Dustin Ackley to second base.
The former Carolina star -- the second pick overall in last summer's MLB Draft -- began the transition this winter. Larry Stone of The Seattle Times has a progress report on Ackley's move.
Mariners scouting director Carmen Fusco raves about Ackley's potential at 2nd. "He's a good baseball player," Fusco said. "His actions, his catching, his throwing, just embody that of a middle infielder. When he took ground balls, it was amazing. Really. Literally. "
If Ackley really is able to convert to a middle infield position, his value skyrockets. He's already rated among the best prospects in baseball -- ESPN's Keith Law ranks him at #8 -- and his offensive skills at an infield position would be a huge plus.
