Coach K vs. Geno
Mar 15, 2010
Say what you will about Duke's inability to make it to the Final Four recently. The Blue Devils haven't been there since 2004. They've also lost in the first round since then. But Mike Krzyzewski has been as awesome in his career in the NCAA Tournament - he's got more tournament wins than any other coach in history.
Wait. Let's rephrase that. He's got more tournament wins than any other men's coach in history. Pat Summitt has him slammed with a 104-20 career mark. UConn's Geno Auriemma has 71 wins. It just so happens that Coach K also has 71 wins.
Seeing how the Huskies have won 72 games in a row and are basically guaranteed to win the championship, I think we'll say that Geno is passing K in tournament wins this March. How about it? Two women's coaches top the list in tourney wins. Soon to be trailing behind in 3rd and 4the place....Coach K and Dean Smith.
I heard that nugget on Mike and Mike in the Morning on Monday.

This is like comparing apples to oranges. Not even close. It makes no sense to even write this one.RE: Coach K vs. Geno
Funny how the editor did not let me say "b alls" in my post which is considered offensive. It should take context into consideration, considering this is a sports board where the item you use in the sport is a "b all" of some sort. That is just silly that it block that word here.RE: Coach K vs. Geno

No offense to Geno but the men's game is so different it is like comparing two totally different things. UConn has no competition in the womens game. It is like they are playing high school teams in the way they crush their opponents. They are just that far ahead. In the men's game, it is just different in how that is played out. The talent pool is deeper and more diverse in how it is spread out.If you are a great player in the mens game, you have many choices. If you are a great woman player, you either go to UConn or Tennessee and lately it is just UConn. That means that it will be lopsided for a while.
You have to respect what Geno has done but realize that the landscape is totally different. He stockpiles the best players and can just crush everyone.
I also think these folks that say that they could beat a mens team are not really knowledgable. The size and strength of any Div 1 mens team would overwhelm these women. This is not a knock, just fact and any seasoned fan of the game would tell you. You can't expect a woman to guard a 6'9 guy with muscle and every D1 program has a few of these guys on their teams. All it would turn into is a block shot contest on one end and a dunk contest on the other. Even if the guys were not that athletic, their size would dominate.
No knock on the women, just the way it is. Their game is different.
I would say that to make the womens game more watchable, there needs to be more parody and the shooting and ball handling and passing needs to be better. I see womens games on tv and there are too many fumbled dribbles and passes and too many that sail out of bounds due to a poor pass. The shooting stroke on some of the non UConn teams is still a heave instead of the fluid shooting motion of the guys. I think that needs to get better to be more watchable on tv. There are some games I just cannot watch due to all of the stuff mentioned above.
