Da Jules on his way to Chapel Hill...almost
Mar 16, 2010
One of the most vocal alumni of NC State almost wasn't.
Former Wolfpack basketball player Julius Hodge joined us in studio yesterday and explained part of the reason why he chose to play in Raleigh as opposed to Chapel Hill.
"When Bill Guthridge was first there, I loved North Carolina," Hodge said. "Carolina always had great New York players, I was on board."
Guthridge eventually retires and Matt Doherty ended up as the new coach of the Tar Heels. That's when Da Jules' way to stardom took a different path.
"I knew I couldn't play for [Doherty}, just the way he looked, he was always upset," Hodge joked. "I said 'I don't want to go to UNC' and told my high school coach. UNC comes out with a story and it goes through the internet that they don't want me, they're picking Jackie Manuel over me. And I was like 'I didn't want you guys, I said it first."
And before any sensitive NC State fans had the chance to have second thoughts about Hodge, he quickly added "I just wanted to put that out there...Wolfpack baby!"

nothing unusual here becasue a number of State's outstanding athletes had UNC on their mind at some time or another. the important thing is that each attended State and had great careers.RE: Da Jules on his way to Chapel Hill...almost
