Report: UNC and Duke on SEC's "dream" list
Jun 13, 2010
Hey, we can all dream.
The Austin-American Statesman is quoting a long-time "SEC veteran" as saying Duke and Carolina are on the SEC's "dream" list along with Texas and Texas A&M.
Of course, "dream" lists are often just that -- dreams. But this is a reputable media outlet posing a scenario that does make at least some sense.
Still, I have a hard time believing Duke and UNC would leave the ACC for a conference with lower academic standards. That simply will not fly with the faculty members at these schools. When asked about a just such an SEC scenario, one UNC official told me "we might not even answer the phone call."
Yet, one has to wonder what many schools will do when faced with the possibility of being "left in the cold" after this round of expansion. If you're on the verge of being in a conference without a BCS bid, your perspective could change -- in a hurry.

We only need to look at college sports as adding value the unversity. Value must be added somehow, and keeping students atttention on sports rather than the poor quality of their education is a useful side benefit.RE: Report: UNC and Duke on SEC's
again, they have no interest in 'beefing up basketball'. it's about football, TV contracts, television markets. With their ABC/ESPN television package, their games are already on the air in the Triad and the Triangle.
The SEC is all over the southeast already, and already recruits at will in Charlotte. their aim is to get into Texas for football recruiting, not North Carolina.
Basketball means nothing. Otherwise, the Big 10 would be clamoring for Kansas to join up, not Nebraska....

In order to BEEF UP basketball.
earth to TruthBKnown....expansion is not about basketball. at all.
Expansion is first and foremost about expanding the "footprint" of a conference into other markets. In other words, it's about money. I'm not stupid.
But why would they want Duke & UNC? To beef up basketball. They could just as easily go after State or Wake. But Duke & UNC would beef up basketball.

Athletic programs help FUND non-athletic programs. Follow the dollar and everything makes perfect sense. May not seem right from a moral sense but that is how this world operates.
I'm well aware that in many/most schools revenue from football and basketball funds not only those two programs but virtually all other athletic teams at the institution. I'm also aware that there are some studies that have found/suggested that those who "donate" to athletic programs also "donate" to the broader university outside the athletic department... non-athletic programs... lthough the "accuracy" of some of those studies is questionable. Is this what you speak of? Other than the very infrequent instance in which the athletic department has "donated" funds to another (non-athletic) unit for a specific purpose, I am not aware of an athletic program in any true sense of the word, "funding" non-athletic programs. I'd like to know about it, would be very interested in knowing if you have some concrete examples. Thanks!
