O'Brien upset about timing of Cincinnati game

After N.C. State beat Central Florida 28-21 on Saturday night head coach Tom O'Brien was both happy and ticked off at the same time.

Happy about the way his defense created turnovers, including one on UCF's final drive to end the game.

But color analyst Tony Haynes didn't end his postgame interview with O'Brien without asking him about the difficulty of now preparing for a Thursday night game against Cincinnati.

That's when he sounded a little ticked off about the timing of the game.

"This is close to impossible. For what we had to do to leave tonight. You know the ACC, I don't know why they did it to us but it's a terrible, terrible thing," O'Brien said on the Wolfpack Sports Network.

Haynes reminded O'Brien that State "kind of saved the ACC" on Saturday.

"Yeah well they offered us up as a sacrificial lamb on Thursday too," O'Brien replied.

The ACC will be involved in four Thursday night ESPN games this season. N.C. State's Sept. 16 game against the Bearcats is the only one that doesn't have an open date preceding it.

Miami has the week off before it's Sept. 23 game at Pitt. Florida State and N.C. State both have the week off before their Oct. 28 matchup. And Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech both get a week of rest before the Nov. 4 game.

But the Bearcats are in the same situation as N.C. State. They played Saturday and have the same short week that the Wolfpack do. Plus they have to travel to Raleigh.

Which year's game are you referring to? This year's Thursday 9/22 game with Cincinnati is at Cincinnati after both team's play the previous Saturday.

The final sentence of this story is what is most important:

Last Saturday, Cincinnati played a cookie-cutter football squad at home (Indiana State) and traveled all the way from their dorm rooms to the football stadium. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack traveled to Orlando, played against a pretty good Conference USA team, and didn't arrive back in Raleigh until Sunday morning.

I disagree with O'Brien's decision to complain about the scheduling, but the ACC should have scheduled a home game for State prior to the Thursday night game to avoid the short turnaround. Compare the scheduling of State's game to the scheduling around FSU's trip to Raleigh (they have 12 days off before their Thursday night game in Raleigh, and then the Noles have nine days off AFTER the game), and you'll see how ridiculous this is.

Central Florida isn't a high school team.

that said, very surprised to hear TOB making excuses. very un-military response to a challenging situation. and the last thing you want to do is put excuses/doubt in your players' heads BEFORE the game.

No, they aren't. They are the preseason favorites to win C-USA.

Funny how you don't see Frank Beamer or the Cincy coach whining.....
Most State fans understand this is W H I N I N G....This will be used as ammo for years to come

Why would Beamer whine? He's not in this situation.

The Cincy coach is in a better situation than us, albeit only a little (their Saturday game was a NOON contest, at HOME, against a CREAMPUFF, so they could rest their starters as much as they felt like).
