Feinstein: Duke should not play ACC football

Best selling sports author and Duke alum John Feinstein dropped by 99.9 The Fan ESPN on Tuesday to plug his new book, The Rivalry: Mystery at the Army-Navy Game.

Eventually the conversation strayed into Duke football. Feinstein did not check his ammunition at the door.

"Another year for Duke fans to focus on their favorite Fall sport, basketball recruiting," the author told Adam Gold and Joe Ovies. "The big news last week was not 'Oh, Duke lost another football game', it was 'Austin Rivers is going to Duke."

Earlier in the day on Tuesday David Cutcliffe joined Mike Maniscalco on 620 The Buzz and expressed some optimism in his team. Cutcliffe said that while his team has lost four straight that his Blue Devils are still a better team than they were weeks ago.

He added, "We have a struggling team, but we don't have a struggling program."

Feinstein responded to that claim.

"Is this team not part of the program? I said years ago, I got shouted down. And I'll still be shouted down, that Duke should not play ACC football."

He went on to claim that if Duke had a president with any leadership ability, he would get together with the presidents at Tulane, Army, Navy, Rice and Vanderbilt and form "Conference SAT" - a league for good academic schools that haven't been competitive in their current football leagues.

John Feinstein will always say what he means and he definitely sets aside school pride when it comes to arguing his points on Duke football. But don't worry, he was equally harsh on the ACC basketball tournament, calling the event a "shadow of what it used to be."

Typical Dook mentality. I say they shouldn't have any sports programs.

Yes on both counts.

Have you even followed State athletics lately?

When did state start playing sports?

Is this really coming from a Duke fan???

be carefull tbk, i hope State does well, but we all know State is also capable of falling apart this season.....you have an easy one coming up that you have to win!!

but if you dont, you might start to see a slide.....

If State doesn't beat BC, we're already on a slide and the season will be a long one.

I'm not worried about it. This team is different. You can feel it. I think in the end, we're going to find that State lost to a very good VT team, and had good chances to beat them, too. I like State's chances against about everybody left on the schedule, except maybe Clemson and Carolina. It can still be a great season.

No top notch player wants to go to NCST, not one.

John Wall was right down the street. NCST and Sid Lowe probably never heard of him.

John Wall listed State in his finalists right up until the end. You can theorize all you want that he only did that to keep the locals off his behind when he never had any intention of going to State. But we were on his list.

In the end, I think we're all glad he didn't stay in the Triangle.

Please explain how the RBC Center has 'helped' NCST for hoops.

In certainly didn't help in even getting a sniff from John Wall.

Ah, but we did get a sniff from John Wall. But that's about all.

Do you think State would have gotten the recruits we've gotten the last two years if we were still playing in the old Barn? I love Reynolds and all, but younger kids don't really care about that history. Some might not mind, but I think most don't want to play in a dump of a building.

It's so refreshing to read State and Duke fans go at it for a change. Ahhhhhh

Don't worry, we'll unite again when one of us is playing the Holes. :)
