Atlanta still a terrible sports town

They say a picture is worth 10,000 empty seats and Atlanta embodies that comment for professional sports more than any city on the planet. Before you say well it is the Atlanta Thrashers or the NHL, the NBA tenant isn't lighting it up either (pun intended). The Thrashers are playing their best hockey in years and had a chance to move up in the standings against a divisional opponent. The announced attendance was 11,043 which is slightly less than the 11,877 the second plash Thrash have been drawing. Phillips holds 18,750 for hockey and 18,729 for NBA games (yes the Hawks still play in Atlanta). The Hawks average 13,934 and trail the Miami Heat by 3 games, and yes, both Atlanta teams place well in the lower third of each league.

If you look close at the picture, that is a black curtain that is blocking off the 400 section, so seating is actually less than the reported number at the Phillips Arena. If there was 11K at the Canes/Thrashers game Thursday night, then you'd believe that the Braves have sold out every playoff game they've had.

I've been to the arena twice for road Canes games. It's a different little arena, kinda odd how it's set up. It's a fun place to watch a game though

Nice to see someone else being the subject of this conversation! Go Canes!

The Braves are usually in the top 15 in attendance but you're right Mike. When the Braves were winning division titles & going to the playoffs, I recall seeing their stadium and wondering why it wasn't sold out. Not surprised Hockey & Hoops are experiencing the same thing. I went to see the Braves play Philly at the end of the season & it was packed but that isn't the norm (Bobby Cox had something to do with it). When I think of true Pro sports towns, I don't think of Atlanta. I think of Boston, NY, Chicago, etc.
