Draftnik would be "shocked" if Panthers don't pick Newton
Feb 22, 2011
Gil Brandt, former director of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys and analyst for NFL.com, told the Star-Telegram that he would be surprised if Auburn's Cam Newton didn't go with the first overall selection in the draft.
"It would shock me... if he's not the first player picked," Brandt said Monday. "If I was drafting and I had Carolina's [No. 1] pick, I'd feel really good about who I was getting as far as ability. I just hope he realizes how hard he needs to work. You can have all the ability in the world but if you don't work like Drew Brees, Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers, you're only going to be semi-successful."
Brandt doesn't mention that the Panthers already have two quarterbacks, Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore. Then again, maybe that's the point. Neither guy has instilled confidence from the fans, but that has never stopped a front office from trying to make it work.
New speculation has the Panthers trading out the pick and going after a receiver, such as A.J. Green. That also puts Steve Smith on the block, which is something Ron Rivera inadvertently did with some recent quotes.
