Reports: Lowe's run coming to an end
Mar 8, 2011
Multiple sources told WRAL Monday that North Carolina State University basketball coach Sidney Lowe is as good as gone after his team's season ends.
Lowe, whose Wolfpack are .500 overall and 5-11 in the ACC, has been under fire for much of the season for failing to produce a winner from a promising freshmen class. He is currently 25-55 in ACC play and the team hasn't finished higher than ninth in the ACC standings in 5 seasons.
NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow has refused to comment on the situation, saying she'd evaluate the coach once the season is complete. With the ACC Tournament looming, that day could be coming soon
Lowe is under contract until 2013, but a buyout would only cost the school about $585,000 if Lowe is released without cause. This information is according to the employment agreement obtained by WRAL.
NC State begins ACC tournament play Thursday night at 7pm against Maryland at the Greensboro Coliseum. Lowe has yet to record a win over the Terps.

- Posted by DeaconsI'd like to think that Debbie Yow has a lot more class than the people putting up this article. It's hard to think that she would just come in for her first year and start firing people, too. When the media can make the news, they're the happiest.- Posted by davidgnews
I would not be surprised to see Lowe come back for at least one more season to combine a strong recruiting with a team that has gained experience. It's cheaper to keep him at this point. NCSU will get a lot of grief for having to spend a large sum of money in a new search /payoff with this economy, just for a coaching turnover.
It may be Yow's first year but not Lowe's first year of ineptitude. I like Lowe, he is a good man but simply cannot coach. I personally know someone that has seen Yow show her you know what after the ECU/State football game in Greenville. She was classless.
I don't disagree with you for the most part, and thanks for the tip. It's taken a lot of other coaches time to get something to work, and I can't say this would or wouldn't happen for Sidney after one more year.
I'd just never heard that she'd ever taken Sidney to the wood shed in the first place, and would see that happening first before he gets fired. It's not an easy conference, no matter what.

i'm down with everything you said,ken...except this perception that people are turning on him..i think that is bunk...Lowe is being paid quite handsomely to coach the team, and all across the conference i see coaches new to the league that are proving that you dont necessarily need more time/your players/fans that wont speak their mind, unless it is positive/etc., to succeed...he hasnt produced....i am pretty sure if Roy Williams was having a repeat of last yr, you would see an upheaval of grumblings from the fan base, DESPITE the 2 nt's...you have to win, that is why the game is played, that is what puts people in the seats on a regular basis, that is what keeps negative opinions at bay...its easy to be duke and unc fans b/c the adversity they face is MINISCULE compared to fans of other schools, not just NC State...the forums are for people to speak their minds, not just for positive feedback and blind, non-results oriented support....if players are going to let negative comments affect their play, then they are not focusing on their daily tasks, and are doing a disservice to themselves...i dont mean blasting players on a personal level, and being crude or vulgar...i mean giving feedback, positive or negative, based on the performance of the team...they play of the team will change the culture of the fans, not the other way around...the heels saw a dip in attendance and a rise of negative posting after ONE season of bad play...and some teams would actually be thrilled to win 20 games in a season....TJ Yates is a perfect example of a young man that didnt punk out and blame negative fans for his lot in life...he was booed at a basketball game by his own fans after being shown on the jumbtron...he didnt sulk or give up and say 'waaah, they dont like me'...he showed all fans what he was made of, and delivered an awesome senior yr, and showed he was a true leader...and, a talented one..RE: Reports: Lowe's run coming to an end
You are right. I haven't really given my opinion about how the team is performing, or my assessment of the job Lowe is doing. What I have said is that this freshman class, which I think was a large part of the basis of unrealistic expectations for this team, was overrated. They have talent, and they have potential. But they weren't ready to carry a team. I think they are getting better, and beginning to learn what it takes to win at this level.Another big part of fans' expectations fell on Tracy Smith's shoulders, and I don't think fans have really appreciated just how debilitating his injury was/is. He just doesn't have the ability he once had to be a dominant inside player, and that has let opponents concentrate on exploiting the inexperience of the rest of the team.
As for Lowe, I'm just not qualified to judge his performance. You "have never have never seen (me) make any comments about the sorry play, sorry record, lack of cohesion, lack of unity, lack of focus, lack of progress...and,most importantly, lack of accountability...". That's true. Why would I? I would love to see State back in the mix for championships every year. It would be good for the school, for the Triangle, for the league. How would adding my voice to the chorus of complaints improve any of those things? How would it help Debbie Yow make a better decision about State's future? The only thing it would do, IMO, is to discourage the players even more than they are now, and help to perpetuate the image of State as an unpleasant place to play and a lousy place to coach.
That's the cycle I spoke of earlier, the cycle State needs to break. Confidence breeds confidence, and positive feedback improves performance far better than negative feedback. If a coaching change needs to be made for the good of the school, Debbie Yow can make that call. I trust her to do what's right. And she'll be able to attract a better coach if he believes fans won't turn on him when the going gets tough
