Austin not snitching on Oustide The Lines
Apr 25, 2011
Former North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin continued his pre-draft media tour, this time on ESPN's "Outside The Lines." The segment features Austin's hustle to get in front NFL teams, including a strict workout regime to disprove that a year away from football has hurt his stock.
Reporter Kelly Naqui also gets to the NCAA investigation and the improper benefits that took Austin off the football field in the first place. The money quote from Austin: "It was like getting caught on the Fourth of July for shooting firecrackers. You aren't supposed to, but everybody does it."
Naqui pressed on the vague answers from Austin, including what kind of things schools might have offered him. Austin said it wasn't really "offers," but simply asking "what do you need in order to get you." When Naqui asked which schools asked him that question, Austin responded, "I would never go into detail."
What did UNC offer Austin? "A great eduction. An opportunity to get to the next level. Great friendships."

- Posted by Hokie 94I truly appreciate what you wrote in this one. Not many can say it like you just did.- Posted by TomP07- Posted by ewcanesWhy even post something like this? All its going to do is bring the ABCers out in full force.- Posted by TomP07
I do not like Marvin Austin. I am a die hard UNC fan and I'm furious at him for what he helped bring to Chap Hill. HOWEVER, I have no reason to not believe anything he said.
I know most of the people on this website believe that UNC is the only university in the ENTIRE COUNTRY that has EVER had any trouble with the NCAA, but the sad truth is, this is happening everywhere. I know the holier than thou NCSU fans think they have the cleanest program in the history of college football, but I'm sorry, you don't. I would guess at least 75% of major college football programs have had something illegal under NCAA rules occur in the last ten years. Whether it be a booster buying a player a cheeseburger, an agent buying a players family a house, or a player accepting thousands in jewelry, this does happen just about everywhere, and it is a widespread problem, not just one in Chapel Hill.
The NCAA needs to do something, and it needs to do something fast. Because while we may indeed lose the NFL season next year, major college football has pretty much become a semi-pro league.
Now, take my opinions for what their worth, because I'm a Panthers fan hoping we take Cam Newton. (For you ABCers who choose to ignore every story that doesn't involve UNC, Cam cheated on numerous tests at Florida, stole a lap top, and then he and his dad demanded almost $200,000 for him to play football at Miss St, and maybe Auburn.)
You're mad at the wrong person boss. Why don't you be mad at the D Line coach who set everything up for improper benefits, or mad at your head coach for reviewing a bogus resume that lead to the hiring of that guy.
I didn't say I was holding Austin personally responsible. I've said DOZENS of times on here that John Blake is a disgrace and that Butch should have been fired as soon as all of this came out. If he knew about it, then he should be fired. If he didn't, then he obviously has no grasp of his program and should be fired. But thanks for bringing that up for no reason.
And the agents are who we should be mad at. I'm not a big Nick Saban fan, but he was right on the money in his description of agents.
It is refreshing to hear a Carolina fan speak the truth on this subject. So many of them are in denial and are unable to do that.

He doesn't have to go into detail. We know the answer . . . Every single school that recruited him.- Posted by cutclifferules
I hate the Heels, but this goes on everywhere. And by "everywhere" I don't mean Vanderbilt or probably Duke. I just mean every program that has NFL talent. Deny that and you are a fool. Carolina just got caught because Austin was dumb enough to tweet it.
The coaches can't control it, the administration can't control it, only the players can control it. You can beat it into them all you want, but kids will take money and gifts when it's thrown in their faces with seemingly no strings attached.
I agree, but only to a point. You act like this is happening outside of the program, like it's just rogue agents offering guys. But rogue agents don't offer players stuff so that they will go to any particular school. They want to get in early with players, so they offer them stuff in order to sign them later on when they eventually turn pro.
No, if a player is offered something impermissible to get them to a particular school, you can guarantee it is coming from someone that has an interest in them attending said school.
Can you say RAMS CLUB? Yeah, I said it.

Not unless you want to use your mind.
At the end of the interview, he answered one of the last questions in a very low voice. He all but said, "I'm not saying any more. Let me outta here." He knew he was busted and you could hear it in his voice.
Did I mention I had a bridge for sale?
RE: Austin not snitching on Oustide The Lines
I heard this on the radio. Austin was lying through his teeth:1) Austin was heavily recruited (he said so in this interview).
2) Schools offer his caliber of recruit anything they want to come to their school. (If you can't read between the lines to see that SOME schools offered him impermissible benefits, you're blind.)
3) He proved that he was willing to accept impermissible benefits because he did exactly that. Plus, his attitude was that he just did what everyone else was doing. That was shown in his comment about people shooting fireworks on the 4th of July. Everyone does it, yet THEY were the ones that got in trouble for it.
So what we have is a man who was heavily recruited, was offered basically anything he wanted to play at some schools, didn't have any problem accepting impermissible benefits, and still doesn't think there's anything wrong with that....... yet we're supposed to believe he chose Carolina NOT because they also offered him anything he wanted, but because they offered him a chance to get a "great education" and make great friends.
To anyone who believes this, I have some swampland for sale. And a bridge.
Just curious, did Marvin complete his degree? I mean, since the "great education" was so important to him and all.
What a joke.
If there was any doubt that recruiting violations have occurred at Carolina, that has been removed. But sadly, unless someone like Marvin decides to clear his conscience and confess, it won't be proven. But he doesn't believe he did anything wrong, so why would he clear his conscience. In his mind, there's nothing to clear.
