Former UNC running back Hunter Furr has transferred to East Carolina, WRAL confirmed Thursday afternoon. Furr will be added to the roster tomorrow, but will have to sit a season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Last week, Furr became the first Tar Heel player to transfer following the firing of Butch Davis the week prior. He asked interim head coach Everett Wither for his release on Aug. 3, saying that he was seeking more playing time.

"I feel it’s in the best interest of my football career to transfer and compete for playing time at another institution," Furr said.

A junior from Lewisville, N.C., Furr played in 11 games last season and saw action in 13 games as a true freshman in 2009. In two seasons, he had eight carries for 35 yards. and was listed second at running back on UNC's 2011 spring depth chart.

On Aug. 5, junior cornerback Mywan Jackson and sophomore defensive tackle Brandon Willis each announced they were transferring away from UNC for personal reasons.

RE: Former UNC RB Furr transferring to ECU

I like Furr. He was not likely to crack the two deep at UNC and he obviously sees an opportunity at ECU. To me that's no slap at ECU. There are surely some players at ECU that we could use at Carolina. I wish he would have stayed at UNC but these kids are in college for themselves, not for us. By the way, competition is a great thing. Being hateful to other schools' fan bases is not. It only makes all of us look bad.

RE: Former UNC RB Furr transferring to ECU

First of all I'm a lifelong NC State sports fan. Having said that it is amazing to observe the arrogance displayed by some UNC and NCSU graduates. Of course it is possible that some posters only experience on these two campuses involves game day. Lets remember that the vast majority of North Carolinians that go on to college don't go to those two schools. Sure you guys were the ones that finished in the top 5-10% of their high school class but the rest of us are the ones that make the world turn. I'll put my confidence in an ASU, ECU, UNC-W, WCU graduate any day. State and Carolina are great universities but that doesn't make the other schools inferior. Plus at ECU, ASU, UNC-G etc. there is a much more well rounded student population.

No, sschoeberle. You brought it up.

That's like getting an unexpected upgrade from coach to 1st class.
