Posted January 13
North Carolina guard Diamond DeShields was named ACC Rookie of the Week on Monday after leading her club to a pair of victories over top 20 clubs last week.
DeShields earned the award for the second time this season by averaging 23.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in wins over No. 20/23 NC State and No. 18/17 Florida State.
She scored 18 of her game-high 25 points after Carolina fell behind by 12 points in the first half.
DeShields had 14 points after halftime in turning a seven-point deficit at intermission into an eight-point advantage in the late stages of regulation of the 65-61 win over the Seminoles in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Norcross, Ga., native was 9-of-15 from the floor and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc in the win over FSU.
On Thursday, DeShields had 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block in the 79-70 win over NC State at Carmichael Arena.
DeShields leads the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game. She is also contributing 5.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
The Tar Heels have earned the league's rookie of the week honor five times this season with DeShields and Allisha Gray having been named twice, while Stephanie Mavunga was honored once thus far in 2013-14.
North Carolina moved up to No. 9 in the latest Associated Press poll, released on Monday afternoon. It's the highest ranking for the program since being eighth in the Jan. 4 poll back in 2011.
Carolina hosts Clemson on Thursday at 6 p.m., on ESPN3. The game will be another "Throwback Thursday" event that includes 1/2 price concessions and more exciting activities surrounding the game.
