WBB: Second half plagues NCCU at B-CU

Posted January 14

Held without a field goal for over seven minutes during the second half, the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team dropped its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up of the season falling to the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats, 67-52, on Monday.

Senior Jessica Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.) led NCCU offensively with a team-best 17 points, junior Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned her sixth double-double of the season chipping in 14 points and 11 boards and fellow junior Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) added 14 points during the Lady Eagle shortcoming.

Starting off on an 11-0 run during the first four and a half minutes of play, the Lady Eagles took their largest lead of the game at the 15:34 mark after a steal and layup from Conerly.

B-CU broke its scoring drought with 15:22 on the clock after a layup from Kailyn Williams put the Lady Wildcats on the board for the first time.

A 13-6 run during the final four minutes for B-CU led by senior Shakeyia Colyer chipped away at the NCCU lead as the Lady Eagles saw their double-digit lead cut to three heading into the half.

With the momentum shift in favor of the Lady Wildcats, NCCU struggled opening up the second 20 minutes of action.

With 18:29 left in the contest, B-CU’s Taylor Houston hit a jumper in the paint to tie the game for the first time at 31.

Conerly knocked down two shots from the charity stripe for the Lady Eagles, but NCCU was unable to find its first field goal of the half until Conerly found sophomore Tisha Dixon (Kinston, N.C.) on the block at the 12:42 mark.

The Lady Eagles were able to bring the game within a seven-point reach after a pair of free throws from Davis with six minutes left to play, but the Lady Wildcats offense was too much to handle for NCCU during the second frame as they pulled ahead by as many as 16.

B-CU was lead by Coyler’s 22 points as Williams collected a double-double for the Lady Wildcats during their first conference victory with 14 points and 11 boards and a game-best six blocks.

As a team, NCCU shot 19-for-54 from the field (35.2 percent), 5-for-14 from behind the arc (35.7%) and 9-for-12 form the charity stripe (75%), while pulling down a game-best 35 rebounds and collecting nine assists, one block and nine steals.

The Lady Eagles open MEAC action at home on Saturday, Jan. 18 as NCCU plays host to the Delaware State Lady Hornets in a 2 p.m. tipoff in Durham.
