Regime McCombs (Fr./Greenville, S.C.) and Ebony Spencer (Jr./Chesapeake, Va.) both came off the bench to score 16 points and 11 points, respectively, as Saint Augustine's University edged Virginia State University 67-62 in the CIAA women's basketball season opener for both teams at Daniel Gymnasium on Thursday.
The Lady Falcons evened their overall record to 5-5 while the Lady Trojans dropped to 7-4.
Porscha Walton (Fr./Chesterfield, Va.) added 10 points, five assists and three steals. She scored three of the Lady Falcons' final four points to give her team the victory. The Lady Falcons led 63-62 with a little over a minute remaining, but Walton drove fullcourt and scored on a layup to extend the lead to three points. Jasmine Cuffee (So./Norfolk, Va.) and Walton both added a free throw for the final margin.
Led by reserves McCombs and Spencer, the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Trojans a whopping 45-11 in bench points. The Lady Falcons shot a season-high 53 percent from the floor compared to 36 percent for the Lady Trojans.
