Weather gods favor Panthers

Posted December 23, 2013
Updated December 30, 2013

All good football teams need a little bit of luck, and the Panthers got theirs on Sunday.

After the half, just as the Saints lined up to take the ball, the football gods opened up a downpour, putting a crimp in the New Orleans Saints' passing game that slowed them down just enough.

I've coached against Drew Brees, both in the dome and out of the dome, and anytime you can get him out in the elements, it takes little bit of the edge off the precision passing game that he plays.

With that opening, Cam Newton used a signature two-minute drill to put the Panthers over the top. Now things could get really, really exciting for Carolina. They are headed to the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Pirate pride

Monday's a big day in Greenville. The East Carolina Pirates have a chance to win their 10th game of the season against Ohio University in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl.

The Pirates are a double-digit favorite in this game, and if they take care of the football, they should come away with a victory.

With wins over Carolina and NC State already, it's already been a great year for Pirates fans. A 10th win would be big, big stuff.

On the flip side, great QBs can pick opposing D's apart, which explains the lofty numbers by the great ones.

Meant to add...it wasn't the Super Bowl though. It was for the NFL Championship. Green Bay played AFL Champ Oakland two weeks later and won 33-14. The Ice Bowl was played on New Year's Eve.

Colder than a witches it's. Serious question? Minus 13 to 18 depending on the source, and a wind chill of about -30. I was sitting on a radiator watching that game about 80 miles from Green Bay. I turned 10 the month before.

Hey Hammer what was the weather like when Starr, and the Packers won that super bowl over the Cowboys?

  • Toddler10-21 Dec 23, 2013

So Brees threw the pick because of the rain? Great players can play in any type of weather. Hey Brees if it werent for Peyton you would have lost your only super bowl. Its called pressure the QB. The rain had nothing to do with it!!! Experts will give excuses to the QB's that usually have the big time stats.

The editors are certainly not keeping abreast of the typos.

Throwing the ball in the rain/snow is an art-and big hands really help. I lived in NY as achild(young teen), and throwing a slick football is a real challenge. Big guys had an advantage!! Cam is 6'5" plus, and Brees is much smaller. That means Brees' hands will be smaller.

Plus-Cam and Co were at HOME!! What an advantage for a BIG GAME!! Plus-Saints crowd is very quiet when they are on offense in the dome-so special counts matter. Not so at BOA yesterday!

All were factors which lead to a Panther's victory. Good job Cam & Co. Hope Steve Smith is ok!!

    HAHAHAHAHA

  • JPack Dec 23, 2013

Um.... Didn't the panthers have to play in the same rain as NO? If both teams are on the field at the same time, how does that give one team an advantage?

Ha! I completely missed that the first time, but thanks for pointing that out! Definitely made my morning.
