WF SOC: Six Deacs earn All-ACC Honors

— Jared Watts, Sean Okoli, Luca Gimenez, Michael Gamble, Collin Martin and Jalen Robinson have each earned All-ACC honors as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.

With six Wake Forest players garnering All-ACC awards, the Demon Deacons tie for the most selections in the conference. Maryland and North Carolina both had six players, as well.

Watts was a First Team All-ACC selection, while Okoli and Gimenez were both named Second Team All-ACC, and after coming in as part of the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, Gamble, Martin and Robinson all earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team.

A native of Statesville, N.C., Watts has now earned All-ACC honors in each of his first three seasons with the Demon Deacons. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2010 and was named First Team All-ACC last year. As a midfielder, Watts has put up the best offensive numbers of his career in 2012 with career-highs in goals (2), assists (4) and points (8).

Gimenez has now earned an All-ACC award in each of his first three seasons, as well. The junior Brazilian was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2010 and then earned a spot on the ACC All-Tournament Team last season after scoring a pair of goals against Virginia. This year, Gimenez is tied for second on the team with a career-best seven goals. He also has three assists for 17 points, while three of his goals have been game-winners. On September 28, he scored his first-career hat trick at Virginia Tech, which led him to be name ACC Player of the Week.

Okoli earned ACC Player of the Week honors twice this season – once after scoring a hat trick against NC State on October 19 and once after scoring a goal and dishing out an assist in Wake Forest’s 4-2 win over top-ranked and previously unbeaten Maryland on November 1. The Federal Way, Wash., native leads the team with 11 goals and 25 points. His goal total second in the conference, while his six goals against ACC opponents is tops in the league. Okoli has scored a goal in three straight games and six of his last seven. During that stretch he has netted eight goals.

Gamble, from Columbia, Md., has also been an offensive force this season, as he is tied for second on the team with seven goals. He is also second on the team with 18 points and is tied for second with four assists. Two of his goals have been of the game-winning variety, while he has played in all 19 games and has made 18 starts as a freshman.

Martin, who came to Wake Forest from Chevy Chase, Md., and graduated from high school a year early, has proven to be a key distributor in the midfield for the Demon Deacons, leading the team with six assists on the year. He has also scored one goal for eight points. Martin has played in all 19 games and has made 14 starts.

Robinson made a splash in his first-collegiate game by scoring the game-winning goal. As a central defender, the Catonsville, Md., native has been a key component to the Deacs seven shutouts and 0.84 goals against average. He has played in 17 games and has made 16 starts, while he has scored two goals and dished out one assist.

Wake Forest will await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 5:30 to find out where it will be playing in this year’s tournament.
