WGOLF: Duncan, U.S. open tied for second at Copa de las Americas

Blue Devil senior Lindy Duncan and the United States team opened the 2013 Copa de las Americas competition in tied for second place overall following Thursday’s opening round at the Doral Resort and Spa in Miami, Fla.

Duncan, who is a product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., carded a round of 76 and the United States team posted an overall score of 295, which is only two shots off the team lead. Argentina totaled a five-over-par, 293, and leads the action. The U.S. is tied with Colombia in second place, while Mexico (298) and Canada (300) rounded out the top five.

On the U.S. squad, Chris Williams notched a 71, Steven Fox a 75, Erynne Lee a 73 and Duncan with a 76. The reigning National Player of the Year in NCAA Division I, Duncan carded only one birdie in the opening round to go along with five bogeys.

In women’s play, Argentina and Canada lead with a 147 with the United States (149), Mexico (153) and Colombia (154) in the top five.

The Copa de las Americas is an amateur team competition for countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. There are three 72-hole competitions – men’s, women’s and overall – with 18 holes played on each of the four days. Seeing action this week will be Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, United States, Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago.
