Wicker-McCree: Academic reform is an area that needs to be refined

Posted July 17, 2014

From education and cost of attendance to transfer rules to pay-for-play models, no question was off limits for University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Bubba Cunningham, Duke University’s Dr. Kevin White, North Carolina State University’s Debbie Yow and North Carolina Central University’s Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree at a Fan Town Hall hosted by 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio on Thursday.

Here are some quotes from NC Central athletics director Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree:

"I think today with the NCAA, the academic reform definitely is an area that needs to be refined as well as enforcement in today's climate where there are so many changes and delays in making decisions. I think that is something that needs to be paid attention to."

"I certainly respect the difference in all the divisions and having transferred from a Division II to a Division I now, there are a lot of changes. It is more of a business. But I respect how each of those divisions make sure they reach the goal of student-athlete well-being in the experience of the student-athlete. And so I think that we should not hinder those larger institutions that are more resourced from doing the things that they do in order to provide the best experience for their student-athletes."

"I wouldn't want to see that student-athlete not be able to capitalize off of their talent but at the same time, keeping in mind, it's much larger than that. It's a fairness and equity issue for me."

"I really think where we are in FCS, in the MEAC conference, I think that we keep trying to provide for the student-athletes and do more and we are doing more, now is it comparative to what the universities are spending at those larger institutions? There's not many that are making the millions of dollars, that percentage is very small. I respect what they can do but then it becomes challenging for us because now our student-athletes are competing with the student-athletes at Duke, Carolina and NC State."

"I think you have to start being more creative. With NCCU and a lot of the historically black colleges, the founding of those institutions were to give to the underserved, whether that was by race, by learning."

"I don't think we've ever denied or cancelled a scholarship due to an injury, honestly unless the student left on their own. We make an obligation to make sure that if the student is injured through athletic participation we're going to take care of that student as long as they do what they're supposed to do to stay in school academically."
