Williams: I'm not talking about P.J.

— North Carolina head basketball coach Roy Williams joined the Wyndham Championship field Wednesday to participate in the Pro-Am at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro but refused to talk about suspended basketball player P.J. Hairston. Williams participated in the event while speculation swirls about the future of his junior guard.

"I'm not talking about P.J. I've read about it all damn summer," Williams said Wednesday. "I'm tired of reading about it. I'm tired of talking about it."

Roy Williams Williams: I'm not talking about P.J.

Williams suspended his leading scorer July 29 after he notched a third traffic stop in three months. Hairston, 20, was cited with speeding and careless and reckless driving that afternoon. First Sgt. Jeff Gordon with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Hairston was driving 93 mph in a 65 mph zone on southbound Interstate 85 near Salisbury.

"It's been a little hectic and some things that make it not as much fun," said Williams. "This is a good release out here getting on the golf course. I've enjoyed the heck out of it today. It's been a hard summer. No question about that."

North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Athletics Department issued a statement saying the suspension was indefinite but will not affect Hairston's scholarship.

On May 13, Hairston was pulled over for speeding in Chevrolet Camaro. The address on that rental traced back to convicted felon and party promoter Haydn "Fats" Thomas.

On June 5, he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license when he was stopped in a silver Yukon at a checkpoint in Durham. That vehicle was also rented by Thomas.

Those charges against Hairston were dismissed when he obtained and completed a drug assessment, and the state decided not to proceed based on those actions.

"P.J. and I have had several discussions already and he knows he has made serious mistakes and there will be serious consequences as a result," Williams said on July 15. "Our basketball program is based on great ideals, and these issues are embarrassing."

Why should he talk about it before a decision is made?

Leave it to WRAL to make it the top story though.

I guess murders and robbery mean less than this bit of non news.

Doodsuckit - How is this non news? You have a kid rolling in expensive rides rented by a felon and the head coach refuses to man up and do the right thing because it will likely ruin the season.....yeah, not news. PJ should have been canned a long time ago. I'm not a Carolina fan but have great friends that are Ram Club members and are appalled by the fact that he is not out. Your comments truly display your lack of intelligence in regards to moral values.

UNC let the football coach Davis go after things started coming out yet they let Coach Williams slide by year after year. I just think that's kinda, I dunno...hypocritical???

You keep that grin on your face. In the end, that grin will disappear and morph
into a sad little frown. Oh, the fun we're going to have with some of you guys.

Huck - Are you angry? If you don't want to talk about it - go ahead and do the right thing and kick him off the team. Then it will be done and over with. You won't have to wait until all the new facts are in and the administration decides how to do damage control and tell you if can keep him or not. For once UNC - do the right thing. Even your fan base wants this to end.
