Williams to have biopsy on left kidney

Chapel Hill, N.C. — North Carolina head men’s basketball coach Roy Williams is having a biopsy on his left kidney, UNC sports information director Steve Kirschner said Wednesday.
Last month, Williams had surgery to remove a tumor from his right kidney. Doctors at UNC Hospitals said the tumor was not cancerous.
The biopsy Wednesday aims to determine whether another operation will be needed.
It remains unclear how much time the 62-year-old coach will miss leading up to the start of preseason practice Oct. 12.
The school said doctors discovered the initial tumor during a physical in September, and the coach underwent a 3½-hour procedure to remove it. Williams spent less than two days in the hospital recovering.
He has led his alma mater to NCAA championships in 2005 and 2009.
