The seventh-ranked Blue Devils outscored High Point 8-5 in the second half and controlled the draw down the stretch to earn a 10-9 victory Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Panthers’ Vert Stadium.

Duke (8-4, 2-2 ACC) rallied from a halftime deficit, using a late 4-0 scoring run to ease past High Point. Junior Kerrin Maurer led the way offensively with five points on two goals and three assists while classmate Taylor Trimble registered her fifth hat trick of the season. Senior Taylor Virden and junior Gabby Moise guided the Blue Devils’ defensive effort, tallying two caused turnovers each.

Trailing by two scores midway through the contest, Duke opened the second period on a 3-1 run with sophomore Kelci Smesko netting two and junior Brigid Smith one during the streak. Senior Maddy Morrissey buried a pass from Maurer to knot the score at 6-6 following a High Point goal by Emily Meier, but the Panthers responded with a free position goal by Alec Perry to put the home team back on top at 7-6.

The Blue Devils then took control at the draw to fuel a four-goal scoring burst. Trimble fired two of her three goals during the run and Morrissey and Maurer added one each. High Point capitalized on a couple of Duke turnovers to cut the score to one with just over three minutes remaining, but Duke’s defense held strong the rest of the way to preserve the win.

The two teams traded goals to start the contest, with Trimble putting the Blue Devils on the board at the 21:58 mark on an assist from junior Katie Trees. Trimble, who surpassed the 100-point mark for her career last weekend against Syracuse, collected her 23rd score of the season on the play. Maurer also added an early goal on a quick pass from senior Sydney Peterson.

High Point took a 3-2 lead with 10:56 remaining in the period and then added another tally by Stephanie Pazulski five minutes later to send Duke into the locker room down 4-2 at the break.

For the game, the Blue Devils outshot the Panthers by a 21-17 margin and led 12-8 at the draw with Maurer corralling a career-best seven draw controls. High Point won the ground ball battle, 15-12.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea posted three saves while Julia Burns had five for the Panthers in the loss. The Duke defense totaled eight caused turnovers on the day.

Duke has a quick turnaround following Wednesday’s contest, hosting fifth-ranked Boston College at 12 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 5 in ACC action at Koskinen Stadium. The program’s eight seniors will be honored after the game.
