— The seventh-ranked Duke women’s lacrosse team collected the second shutout in program history and first since the 1998 season in a 23-0 victory over Presbyterian Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. The 23-goal margin was also the largest in school history, sending the Blue Devils to 2-0 on the year following the opening weekend of action.

Thirteen different Blue Devils scored in the win, led by sophomore Chelsea Landon’s career-high four-goal performance. Sophomore Brigid Smith notched a career high with three scores while classmate Taylor Trimble also recorded a hat trick.

“Our scoring was really spread out and I thought that we did a really good job, particularly in the second half, of being disciplined and organized and really getting the looks that we wanted,” said head coach Kerstin Kimel. “Our goal was to really play disciplined defense, both in transition and then once in settled defense to create turnovers. I thought we limited our turnovers and were very succinct in our passing.”

Duke (2-0, 1-0 ACC) had a 15-0 advantage at halftime and outscored the Blue Hose (0-1, 0-0 Big South) 8-0 in the second period. The Blue Devils outshot Presbyterian 41-3, dominated the draw, 18-7, and went 9-of-10 on clears for the afternoon.

Smith kicked off the scoring for Duke, converting a free position shot less than two minutes into the contest. The Blue Devils went on to score six more goals in the opening 10 minutes and led 15-0 at the break. The 15 goals were the most by Duke in a half since the squad posted 17 in a 25-3 win over Bucknell in the 2012 season opener.

The second half saw the Blue Devils continue to dominate time of possession and capitalize on turnover opportunities. Landon contributed her third and fourth scores of the contest, and senior Alyssa Ogle, junior Sydney Peterson and junior Emma Tucci all registered their first goals of the 2013 campaign.

Ogle and freshman Kelci Smesko finished with three assists each, while rookie Maddy Acton corralled a game-high four draw controls to go with one goal, one assist and one ground ball. Acton also joined Smith and Landon in causing two turnovers apiece and the Blue Devils picked up 19 ground balls to Presbyterian’s 10. Senior Kaitlin Gaiss tallied two saves in goal for the Blue Devils.

Additionally, five members of Duke’s freshman class saw the field Sunday with the rookies combining for two goals, four assists and four draw controls.

“I was really pleased that we were able to play everybody who’s available to play today,” Kimel said. “It gave people, especially the younger players, to get experience against somebody other than their teammates. Moving forward, hopefully today was a day that we were able to build our depth a little bit and get our kids some confidence and also see what they can do against outside competition.”

The Blue Devils continue their four-game homestand Friday, Feb. 15 when they host Richmond at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
