To celebrate the spirit and passion of former NC State head coach Jim Valvano, the Wolfpack will wear specially designed jerseys when it faces Connecticut at the 18th annual Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

The red road jersey will feature a net design around the collar and shoulders, reminiscent of Valvano wearing the nets following his “Cardiac Pack’s” dramatic run to the 1983 national championship. On the back of each jersey will be Valvano’s famous line of “Don't Ever Give Up,” first heard during a pre-game speech on Feb. 21, 1993, prior to NC State’s game with Duke at Reynolds Coliseum which he served as the color analyst on the ABC broadcast. Also highlighting the jersey will be the V Foundation’s signature V logo.

Limited quantities of jersey replicas will be available at the following outlets: NCSU Bookstore, GoPack Store, Alumni Hall at Crabtree Valley Mall, Pro Sports at Crabtree Valley Mall, Neebo Bookstore at Mission Valley and on Hillsborough, and local Dick's Sporting Goods.

The Wolfpack and Huskies play in the nightcap of the event on ESPN.

If you were around then you know some of the players were selling shoes. Coach V did nothing wrong. Show us something where Jimmy V was charged with anything or did anything wrong. Proof not talk. Also, ESPN had no problem hiring Valvano as shown by their continued support for the Jimmy V Foundation, the amount of air time he got back then and even now. No rewrite, just fact.

I see your point, but you have to realize the utter manure we UNC fans have had to endure the last couple of years, with State fans saying Roy is also guilty in the academic scandal. Is he? I have no idea. But at this point, he hasn't been implicated for anything at all. Just NCSU talking points. But again, I see your point.

The only reason you've had to "endure" that "manure" is precisely because of comments just like this: "at this point [Roy] hasn't been implicated for anything at all."

1)For one, he's been totally "implicated." The evidence uncovered has done nothing but "implicate" his involvement in academic rule breaking. His problems @ Kansas + Wayne Walden + Sean May + Mary Willingham clearly "implies" Roy had knowledge, and potentially input into what was taking place. Are you sure you know what the word "implicated" means? It is not the same as "indicted."

2) The only reason this "implication" hasn't resulted in anything more is because pretty much everyone in a position to do something about it: UNC faculty/admin, the local media (sans Dan Kane), ESPN (president is a UNC alum), the BOG (UNC alums), the ACC (commish John Swofford=UNC alum), the SBI (run by gov's office, UNC alum Bev Purdue) are all associated with UNC and doing their best to cover the whole dam thing up so that it goes away without completely destroying the basketball team and, gulp, possibly being traced back to Dean Smith.

3) And that leaves guys like you. The fans/alums. Who, if they weren't such self-absorbed image-obsessed pansies, might stand up and demand that the people who broke the rules be held accountable. But you don't want that. And you don't want that because you're afraid. You're afraid of the truth. And that's why you refuse to connect the dots on your own. That's why you bury your head in the sand, hiding behind absurd comments like "Roy hasn't been implicated in anything yet."

You're in complete denial. And as long as UNC supporters keep hiding from the truth, guess what, you're going to keep getting called out by Duke/NCSU/Wake fans who have had to listen to your degrading condescension and self-righteous "Dean Smith is the greatest"/"the Carolina Way" yapping for the last three decades. You only have yourselves to blame.

"The guardians of college sports can commit no greater sin than to compromise the academic integrity of their institutions"

Well, there you have it in a nutshell. If you're guilty, let the chips fall where they may.

Wow - interesting article. I guess it's easy to romanticize the Jimmy V era, but as a Heels fan, I'd be well served to keep my pie hole shut, as we all know about the football program's academic violations.

I would also but after reading 3 years of UNCheat comments, I feel it necessary to reply. What crime has Butch Davis been convicted of? Show me proof where Butch Davis did anything wrong. Anyway, this is not really about Jimmy V. This about how Debbie is using Jimmy V to "fire up" the team. This is display will also help with recruiting, and I'm sure you will see shirts, and jerseys on sale with this model. She knows how to feed the Redrager and control them like the ravaging rage they are.
BTW, There is a difference between Valvano as a coach and the setup he had with Poulton, and the man that was humbled by cancer and did so much to fight against the disease that killed him.
There were many articles on ABC and ESPN not concerning him, but finding articles from over 20 years ago isn't easy. But, I read Personal Fouls many years ago, and I believe most of the stuff that was written in that book. Too bad the NCAA rules committee was so limited in staff to do the type of investigation that they can do now and would be required to do now.

Yeah..its funny how in retrospect many people remember the big upset and Valvano's early demise which turned him into some kind of martyr, and yet conveniently forget just how out of control the basketball program was under his tenure. It wasn't just some players selling shows - it was the wholesale recruiting of people who never belonged in college and how very few of them ever came close to graduation.
