Duke Riding Two-Match Win Streak
Duke heads into the weekend with a two-match win streak under its belt. The Blue Devils avenged previous losses to Appalachian State and Boston University last week to improve to 4-5 overall for the year. Duke upended the Mountaineers 24-15 in the home opener as it got bonus points from Marcus Cain, Immanuel Kerr-Brown and Trey Adamson. The Blue Devils dominated the Terriers three days later, posting four falls en route to the 30-13 victory. Adamson, Diego Bencomo, Brandon Gambucci and Cain each registered pins in the win. Duke’s four wins this season are one more than its total from a year ago.
Duke and Davidson continue their long-standing rivalry as they meet for the 50th time since the first match in 1927. The Blue Devils are 38-11 all-time against the Wildcats and have won five straight, including last season’s 43-0 victory. Duke last lost to Davidson, 18-17, in 2007. The Blue Devils will face SIUE for the first time in program history. The bout against the Cougars and Wildcats will be Duke’s third and fourth Southern Conference opponents this season. The Blue Devils are 2-0 against SoCon foes this year with wins over VMI and Appalachian State.
Sporting a 4-5 record after a pair of home wins, Duke has nine more outings before heading to the ACC Championships March 9. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Gambucci is 11-3 overall for the year and 6-2 in duals at 133 pounds, while Tanner Hough is 14-12 overall and 5-4 in dual matches in the 141-pound division. Also breaking into the double-digit wins category recently is Adamson at 174, with a 12-12 overall record. Adamson is 5-4 in duals and has scored bonus points in three of his past four outings for the Blue Devils. At 184 pounds, Bencomo has won two straight to move to 8-9 for the year, while Kerr-Brown is 18-11 for the year at 157 pounds. Wrestling up a weight class, Brian Self is 3-3 in duals at heavyweight.
