WRES: Duke Falls at No. 11 Virginia

— The Duke University wrestling team concluded its weekend of action with a 38-0 setback at No. 11 Virginia Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils dropped three of the bouts by three or fewer points against the ACC foe and their fourth top 20 opponent of the season.

Duke (2-5, 0-2 ACC), coming off of a win at VMI the previous evening, started the match against the 11th-ranked Cavaliers at 149 pounds. The Blue Devils forfeited the match, finding themselves down 6-0 early.

Virginia (11-3, 2-1 ACC) continued its momentum from the win over North Carolina Friday night and added a major decision and technical fall at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively for a 15-0 lead.

At 174 pounds, freshman Trey Adamson matched up against No. 14 Jon Fausey. Adamson battled hard as Fausey scored a takedown in the final 20 seconds of the first period for the 2-0 advantage. The Cavalier redshirt junior added a reversal to start the second period and never let Adamson get a good scoring look en route to the 5-0 decision and 18-0 lead for Virginia.

The Cavaliers added consecutive major decisions to stretch their advantage to 26-0 before Duke rallied in a couple of narrow losses.

Fresh off of his second win at heavyweight, junior Brian Self put forth an outstanding effort against Derek Papajianopoulos. The redshirt sophomore picked up two early takedowns for the Cavaliers to lead 4-1 after the first period. Self, looking to improve to 3-2 in duals this season, maintained his composure and escaped to start the second stanza and pull within two, 4-2. Papajianopoulos responded with an escape in the final session and held off any shots from Self to post the 5-2 decision.

After redshirt senior Peter Terrezza battled hard in a 9-2 decision to No. 7 Matthew Snyder at 125 pounds, the Blue Devils turned in two thrilling performances to close the day.

At 133 pounds, Duke redshirt sophomore Brandon Gambucci took on 13th-ranked George DiCamillo. Hoping to add another win to his total, Gambucci traded takedowns and remained tied with the Virginia freshman midway through the second period. DiCamillo managed to escape Gambucci’s grasp to pull ahead 3-2 heading into the final two minutes of regulation. The Mansfield, Ohio native started down in the third period and needed an escape to even the bout 3-3. Gambucci, seeing the clock tick down, finally got out from bottom to make it 3-3, but DiCamillo had already built enough riding time for the bonus point and 4-3 decision.

The excitement continued at 141 pounds between Duke’s Tanner Hough and Virginia’s Jimmy Nehls. The two wrestled evenly in the first period with no scoring. Finally, in the waning seconds of the second session, Hough escaped to go ahead 1-0 with just two minutes remaining. After minimal scoring in the opening five minutes, the final period featured a flurry of action. Nehls escaped and then added a takedown midway through the period before Hough escaped to make it 3-2 nearing the end of the bout. With just enough time for one more shot, Nehls was able to hold off Hough for the 3-2 victory.

Duke makes its home debut Jan. 23 against Appalachian State at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils wrestle in Card Gymnasium on Duke’s campus, directly adjacent to Cameron Indoor Stadium.
