— The NC State wrestling team fell at Maryland on Saturday, 23-14. The Pack recorded three straight wins towards the end of the ACC dual, but it was not enough as NC State (12-6) fell to an unranked team for the first time this year.

The Pack won four of the 10 matches on the day, including a pair of bonus point wins.

Junior Tommy Gantt (157 pounds) and senior Nijel Jones (165 pounds) both recorded major decisions. Gantt won 15-5, while Jones recorded a 14-6 win to bring the Pack four points each. Freshman Pete Renda made it three straight Pack wins, as he earned a 7-2 decision at 174 pounds and closed an 18-3 Maryland lead down to 18-14.

The Pack went into the final match down four, but Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock, the top-ranked wrestler nationally at 184 pounds, recorded a tech fall.

In a battle of top 10 wrestlers at 285 pounds, NC State’s sixth-ranked Nick Gwiazdowski recorded an 11-8 decision over eighth-ranked Spencer Myers. Gwiazdowski improves to a perfect 17-0 in duals this year and four of his last five wins have been over ranked foes.

The Pack will return to action tomorrow, traveling to American for a dual at noon.
