WTEN: Duke defeats Florida State, 6-0

The top-ranked Blue Devils moved to 6-1 in ACC competition and 15-1 overall with a 6-0 defeat of No. 43 Florida State Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The match, aired on ESPN3 as part of United States Tennis Association (USTA) College MatchDay, marks the seventh consecutive win for Duke and second shutout victory in as many matches.

“We played well,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “I think we were up 1-0 on every court, and that’s always good to see. It’s something we talked about before the match, playing with a lot of persistence and determination. I thought we were able to able to do that, and close out some matches fairly quickly.”

Senior Marianne Jodoin led the Blue Devils off the courts, not dropping a game against Florida State’s Majlena Pederson, to win 6-0, 6-0 on court 6. Jodoin, now 6-2 at the No. 6 position, earned her 20th win of the season. Jodoin eclipsed the 20-win mark for the first time in her collegiate career.

On court two, No. 24 Ester Goldfeld defeated Kerrie Cartwright, 6-3, 6-4. With the match tied at 2-2 in the first set, Goldfeld won four consecutive games to take the first set. Goldfeld opened the second set, trailing 1-2. Goldfeld reclaimed the lead over Cartwright, leading 5-4, before serving out the match. Goldfeld now owns a 21-7 record, also surpassing the 20-win mark for the first time in her career.

Senior Rachel Kahan extended her winning streak to six matches after defeating Daniela Schippers, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 position. Tied at 2-2 in the first set, Kahan won three straight games to bring the first set to 5-2. After dropping a game, Kahan closed out the first set, 6-3. In the second set, Kahan jumped out to a 4-1 lead, en route to a 6-2 second set. Kahan reached double-digit wins with the victory, improving to 10-3 on the season.

Senior Hanna Mar, ranked 31st in the nation, clinched the victory for the Blue Devils with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mia Vriens on court three. Mar jumped out to a 3-1 lead in both sets. In the first set, Mar held a 5-1 advantage before surrendering two games, bringing the set to 5-3. Mar took the following game to win the first set, 6-3. In the second set, Mar dropped just two games, winning by a 6-2 margin and securing her 18th win of the season.

Sophomore Beatrice Capra cruised on court one, defeating Daneika Borthwick, 6-2, 6-2. Capra only trailed once in the match, falling behind 1-2 before winning five consecutive games to secure a first-set win. Capra opened the second set with three wins before Borthwick brought the match to 3-1. Capra dropped just one more game before winning out and closing the contest at 6-2, 6-2. Capra, Duke’s singles leader, sits at 22-6 on the season.

The contest on court five between No. 94 Alyssa Smith and Kristina Schleich ran to three sets, with Smith winning 7-5, 1-6, 6-0. The two singles players were evenly matched in the first set, as there were four ties before closed the first set, 7-5. In the second set, Smith fell behind, 0-4, and could not rebound, dropping the set, 1-6. Smith asserted herself in the third-set tiebreak, not dropping a game on her way to winning the 19th match of her freshman campaign.

The Blue Devils have a quick turnaround, welcoming Northwestern to Durham, N.C., Wednesday at 3 p.m.
