Posted November 4, 2013
Portland, Ore. — Duke University junior Ester Goldfeld defeated Blue Devil teammate Hanna Mar on Sunday in the USTA Wildcard Shoot-out championship to close the USTA Collegiate Invitational at the Tualatan Hills Tennis Center in Portland, Ore.
“It was a really good weekend for everyone involved and a great way for this group out here in Portland to end their fall season,” said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. “For us to have the two finalists in this event says a lot about where we are and the level we are playing at right now. We are a much better team than we were eight weeks ago and now are looking forward to getting back to Duke and working hard the remainder of the fall.”
Goldfeld, who is out of Brooklyn, N.Y., opened action on Sunday with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Portland’s Maja Mladenovic to advance to the shootout. She then defeated Samantha Hampton of USTA, 10-2, Tereza Bekerova of Utah, 10-6, and Mar, 11-9, to win the singles title.
A native of Burr Ridge, Ill., Mar continued her solid play during the weekend cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ena Shibahara of USTA in the first match Sunday. She lost only one game in Portland prior to heading into the shoot-out. Mar totaled a 13-11 win over Maggy Lehmicke of Nebraska, Bess Waldram of USTA, 10-6, and lost to Goldfeld in the shoot-out.
