WTEN: NC State Comes Up Short at No. 58 Georgia State

— The NC State women’s tennis team came up short on the road Sunday versus No. 58 Georgia State, dropping a 6-1 decision at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

For the third match in a row, the Wolfpack (6-3, 1-2 ACC) was playing a ranked team on the road that featured a singles player and a doubles team ranked among the ITA top 40.

Rachael James-Baker improved her singles record to 6-3 on the season with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Masa Grgan in the No. 2 singles match. In No. 1 singles, Joelle Kissell lost a hard-fought first set, 7-5, to No. 11 ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah, before falling 6-2 in the second set, while Nicole Martinez suffered an equally heartbreaking fate, dropping a 10-8 decision in the third set of match to fall 4-6, 6-4, 0-1 (8-10).

Liza Fieldsend and Elisha Hande both lost tightly-contested first sets, 6-4, in their respective matches before falling in the second set to come up short at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Sophie Nelson, playing in the No. 6 slot, fell to Chaimaa Roudami 6-2, 6-3.

GSU took the doubles point to kick off the match as the No. 15 doubles pair of A. Tere-Apisah and Grgan defeated Hande and Martinez 8-2, while Marcia Tere-Apisah and Tarani Kamoe beat Nelson and Kissell, 8-3.

The Wolfpack returns home to the friendly confines of the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Thursday, March 4 to take on Winthrop. First serve is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
