— North Carolina freshmen Jamie Loeb and Hayley Carter have advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship.

Top seeded Loeb (52-3) won 6-3, 6-2, over Zoe Scandalis of USC on Thursday in a second round match on the McWhorter Courts.

Loeb will take on Breaunna Addison of Texas on Friday with the winner moving to the quarterfinals. Addison is one of only three players to beat Loeb this season when she took a two-set decision at the season opening Duke Fab Four event last September.

No. 7 seed Carter (49-6) also won in straight sets for the second consecutive day, 6-2, 6-2 over Desirae Krawczyk of Arizona State.

The Hilton Head, South Carolina, product will face Jenny Jullien of St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Friday.

In doubles action on Thursday, third-ranked Carter and Loeb were forced to come from behind to beat Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung from Columbia. After giving away the first set, 6-3, the Tar Heel duo cruised over the last two sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-2, to advance into the Round of 16.

Carter/Loeb will take on Notre Dame’s duo of Quinn Gleason and Britney Sanders on Friday.

UNC”s Caroline Price and Whitney Kay also dropped the opening set, 7-5, to Florida’s Olivia Janowicz and Kourtney Keegan, but rallied for 6-1 and 6-2 victories in sets two and three, respectively, to move on in the tournament.

They will face Clemson’s tandem of Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies on Friday.
