XC: UNC's Farber Places 40th, Deemed All-America

Lianne Farber placed 40th at the 2012 NCAA National Championships on Saturday to earn her first All-America honors in cross country. Farber, a redshirt sophomore from Northport, N.Y., ran the 6K in 20:18.0.

“It feels really good, I feel like everything has finally come together,” Farber said after the race. “The race went really fast, probably the fastest I’ve ever started out in a cross country race.”

Farber clocked in at 22nd through the first mile but slowed her pace through the middle splits of the race landing her within two seconds of All-America status coming down the final stretch.

“We were counting places the whole way and the last point we saw her was maybe 400 meters from the finish where we counted her at 53rd,” said Coach Mark VanAlstyne, “We knew it was within reach of her kick -- she has a tremendous kick coming to the close of races -- so we started yelling ‘It’s right there, you’ve got to go!’ She kicked and ended up passing th
