Yorgen's RBI Triple Completes ECU Sweep, 2-1

Posted March 30

— Charlie Yorgen’s RBI triple in the eighth inning broke a one-all tie propelling East Carolina (17-11) to its seventh-straight win and a weekend sweep of UMBC (5-14), 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Dylan Brown singled through the right side to lead off the eighth. After moving into scoring position on Eric Tyler’s sac bunt, Yorgen laced a 1-2 offering from Joe Dierks down the right field line easily scoring Brown for a 2-1 Pirate advantage.

Ryan Williams (8-1) picked up yet another win in relief tossing three scoreless frames. The right-hander allowed just two hits and struck out four, including the side in the eighth. Starter David Lucroy was solid in his second-straight outing allowing one run (unearned) on three hits with three strikeouts in six innings.

Dierks (1-2) took the loss surrendering one run (earned) on two hits in two innings of relief. Starter Joe Vanderplas also allowed one run (earned) on two hits with a strikeout and one walk.

The Pirates finally broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Drew Reynolds crossed home on Ian Townsend’s sac fly to center. Reynolds, singled to start the frame, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Zach Houchins’ grounder to second.

UMBC knotted the contest at one-all in the sixth when Rob McCabe scored on a passed ball. McCabe walked to open the inning, took second on Connor Hax’ sac bunt and moved to third on Andrew Casali’s grounder back to Lucroy just left of the mound.

Williams, who made his 15th appearance of the season, allowed back-to-back singles to Hunter Dolshun and Jake Barnes to begin the seventh, but Ian Townsend was able to throw Dolshun out at second off Barnes’ bloop single in between first and right field, and Eric Tyler gunned down Barnes trying to take second. Williams got Manny Colon swinging for the final out and then retired the side on strikeouts in the eighth. In the ninth, he made quick work of the Retrievers inducing three ground ball outs on six pitches for his NCAA-leading eighth victory.

The pitching duo of Lucroy and Williams allowed just three runners to reach scoring position (fifth, sixth innings) in the contest. Offensively the Pirates were limited to just four hits with Brown posting his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Despite and 0-for-2 day at the plate with a sacrifice, Tyler helped hold UMBC running game in check throwing out three would-be base stealers at second.

ECU will hit the road for eight of its next nine games starting this week when it heads to No. 18 NC State (April 2) and No. 13 Rice (April 4-6). Wednesday’s game in Raleigh against the Wolfpack is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will be streamed on ESPN3.
